“All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s words remind us that true leadership in the City is not rooted in title or power, but in the daily commitment to serve with integrity, compassion and purpose. His legacy teaches our leaders, from City Councilmembers to volunteers, that progress requires courage, long-term vision and the willingness to imagine what a community can become when we choose unity before division.
In Santa Clarita, we strive every day to embrace that calling. Whether we are investing in sustainable infrastructure, expanding parks and open spaces, strengthening public safety systems or creating meaningful opportunities for youth, arts and workforce development, our work is guided by the belief that great cities are built on tomorrow’s visions. Dr. King’s example challenges us to think boldly, act intentionally and lead with the unwavering conviction that every resident deserves dignity and kindness.
This is why the City of Santa Clarita is honored to host the fifth annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Walk on Monday, January 19, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. at Central Park. The walk will begin near the public art installation, When Cloud Met a Cloud — an art piece that shows that even the simplest moments can inspire connection. This Unity Walk’s theme, “Mission Possible 2 – Building Community, Uniting a Nation the Nonviolent Way,” continues Dr. King’s call for peaceful action and reaffirms our City’s dedication to building bridges rather than barriers. Participation is open to all members of the community and no registration is required.
Those attending the event will be welcomed with opening remarks from the Mayor, followed by a moving invocation centered on hope, harmony and shared purpose. The program will feature local youth groups performing inspiring pieces that reflect the optimism and promise that Dr. King devoted his life to uplifting. There is something deeply heart-touching about listening to our local youth use their voices to help shape the world they are growing into.
For the first time, students from the William S. Hart Union High School District will also contribute through a special essay contest reflecting on Dr. King’s everlasting influence. A portion of the winning essay will be read aloud during the event, illustrating how our next generation interprets his powerful messages and applies them to the challenges of our time.
Just as Dr. King taught that service is the highest form of leadership, attendees are encouraged to bring donations to support Bridge to Home, Santa Clarita’s primary homeless services provider. Simple items of generosity, such as toiletries, warm clothing and nonperishable food, can greatly impact the lives of our neighbors in need.
As we prepare to gather at Central Park, I invite all ages to join us — to walk together, reflect and reaffirm our commitment to building a City that is always defined by community bond, service and hope. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Walk is more than an annual tradition; it is a moment to ensure every individual has the chance to live with dignity and possibility.
By honoring Dr. King’s legacy, we renew our dedication to the values that strengthen both our City and our nation. I hope to see all of you there.
