“Please be a traveler, not a tourist. Try new things, meet new people and look beyond what’s right in front of you. Those are the keys to understanding this amazing world we live in.”
— Andrew Zimmern
Santa Clarita is enriched by the many cultures and traditions that shape our community. For the past four years, the City’s Celebrate event series has reflected that vibrant diversity. Traditions that have been passed down through generations form the strong and enduring fabric of our identity. When we take time to learn from one another and honor the heritage of others, we strengthen the spirit of our entire community.
From April through September, Celebrate invites residents to journey across the globe without ever leaving Santa Clarita. Held on the second Friday of each month at the Canyon Country Community Center (18410 Sierra Highway), from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., each evening highlights a different destination through live music, dance, crafts, cuisine and cultural experiences that bring global traditions to life. Celebrate is more than a series of events; it is an opportunity for families and friends to deepen their appreciation for the traditions that connect us all.
Our journey begins on Friday, April 10, as we travel “across the pond” to England, embracing centuries of history and timeless customs. Guests can enjoy soccer-themed activities, traditional fare, such as fish and chips, royal-inspired arts and crafts and interactive experiences for all ages. A British rock tribute band will provide lively entertainment throughout the evening.
On May 8, we honor the spirited traditions of Cajun heritage found in southern Louisiana, known for its music, storytelling and distinctive culinary customs. The sounds of live brass instruments will fill the air as we celebrate with flavors and festivities inspired by Mardi Gras. Make sure to save room for a traditional Cajun sweet treat, beignets!
On June 12, we turn our attention to Indonesia, a nation comprised of more than 17,000 islands and hundreds of ethnic groups and languages. Traditional Indonesian dance performances and authentic cuisine provided by Stopbye Café Food Truck will offer residents a meaningful glimpse into this diverse and vibrant nation.
On July 10, we head to South America to celebrate Argentina, a country known for its deep-rooted traditions in music and dance. Professional tango dancers will share the artistry and rhythm that define Argentine culture, while interactive activities will provide opportunities for guests of all ages to participate.
August 14 brings us to Jamaica, where vibrant rhythms played by a Jamaican Tribute band and island traditions reflect a proud cultural identity. Musical performances and hands-on crafts will highlight the creativity and heritage that make Jamaica so distinctive. Before you leave Jamaica, test your Olympic abilities at our Usain Bolt Sprint Challenge!
Our journey concludes on September 11 as we celebrate Mexico, honoring the vibrant heritage and traditions that have helped shape communities in Santa Clarita and across the country. Mexico’s cultural influence runs deep in our region, including the Rancho era that helped shape the early history of the Santa Clarita Valley. At Celebrate Mexico, guests will enjoy the artistry of Ballet Folklórico and the spirited sounds of Mariachi music, along with Día de los Muertos-inspired face painting, sugar skull crafts, a friendly soccer exhibition and a lively game of Lotería.
No journey is complete without a keepsake. Attendees can pick up a Celebrate Passport at their first event and collect a new stamp each month. Each stamp earns an entry into the Celebrate Raffle, featuring prizes inspired by the destinations showcased throughout the series. Winners will be contacted following the final event in September.
Celebrate is a free, family-friendly series that reflects the global connections present within our own community. I encourage you to join us as we learn from one another, honor diverse traditions and continue building a City that values heritage, understanding and shared experiences.
I look forward to seeing you there as we celebrate the many cultures that enrich Santa Clarita.
