Tonight, we adjourn our meeting in memory of James “Jim” Tanner, a beloved family man, respected educator and longtime community leader.
Jim passed away peacefully on August 14, just shy of his 91st birthday.
Born in Sterling, Colorado, he often spoke fondly of his small-town childhood, filled with stories, games and adventure with his siblings and friends.
After serving in the U.S. Army, Jim earned his master’s degree in education and began what would become a lifelong career here in Santa Clarita.
He started teaching business at Hart High School in 1960, later serving as a counselor and administrator at Placerita Junior High, where he became Principal in 1983 and retired in 1994.
Generations of students and families were shaped by his leadership and care.
Jim married the love of his life, Geni, in 1956, and together they raised four children, nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by Geni, and his family remains his proudest legacy.
Outside of education, Jim loved golf, woodworking, running, camping and cheering on Hart football.
He was also a man of deep faith, serving actively at Christ Church Santa Clarita and volunteering with the Food Pantry and Boys & Girls Club.
Jim will be remembered for his kindness, humility and devotion to family, community and faith.
