State water regulators have approved new regulations with the goal of reducing water use in California by 20 percent. These regulations apply to everyone in California. As of August 1, 2014, residents, business owners and public agencies are not permitted to waste water on lawns, landscaping, and car washing and may be fined per State regulations for non-compliance with the mandatory restrictions detailed below.
The City is working with our local water purveyors to better understand how these new regulations will be managed and enforced in Santa Clarita.
The mandatory restrictions approved by the State Water Resources Control Board prohibit the use of water as detailed below, unless it is necessary to address an immediate health and safety need to comply with a different State or Federal permit:
- Outdoor irrigation that causes runoff such that water flows onto adjacent property, non-irrigated areas, private and public walkways, roadways, parking lots or structures.
- Using a hose to wash an automobile unless the hose has an automatic shut off nozzle.
- Application of water to any hard surface including but not limited to driveways, sidewalks and asphalt
- Using potable water in a fountain or decorative water feature unless the feature has a recirculating system.
