Public Employee Pension

The City is a member of the Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). Your defined benefit plan is based on:

  • Years of CalPERS service
  • Age at retirement
  • Average of highest three-year salary
  • Retirement formula

Deferred Compensation

Employees may participate in the City’s 457 Deferred Compensation Plan sponsored by MissionSquare. The plan provisions:

  • Taxes deferred until you withdraw money
  • Enroll anytime during the year
  • Eligible to withdraw money after termination of employment 
  • Loan options available


Health Insurance

The City has a cafeteria health benefits program which provides either payment towards the premium for the employee and eligible dependents, or cash payment if you and your dependents already have health benefits. The cafeteria dollars currently cover 100% of the lowest cost of family health care plans (medical, dental, & vision). Exact benefit amounts vary by hire date.

Medical Insurance is provided to employees and eligible dependents through the Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS). There are three Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO’s) and three Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO’s) to choose from. Dental and Vision insurance options are also available.

Life Insurance and AD&D Coverage

All regular employees working a minimum of twenty (20) hours per week are eligible for annual Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage in the amount of one times their salary to a maximum specified of $150,000. Premiums for both basic life and AD&D are paid in full by the City with no cost to the employee. Supplemental life, spousal and dependent child options are also available.

 

Long-Term Disability

All regular employees working a minimum of twenty (20) hours per week are eligible for long-term disability coverage. Premiums for the plan are paid by the City with no cost to the employee.

Life Assistance Program

The City provides a Employee Assistance (EAP) for all regular employees and their eligible dependents. The confidential EAP program can refer employees to professional counselors and services that can help resolve emotional health, family and work issues, or provide help with financial and legal questions.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

The City offers a flexible spending account option for Dependent Care and Health Care Expenses. With these plans, employees can choose to place a portion of their earnings into a personal reimbursement account on a pre-tax basis. Doing so lowers employees’ taxable income for the year and allows them to pay for their qualified dependent care and eligible health care expenses with pre-tax dollars.

Holidays

The City offers fourteen (14) paid holidays per year. One floating holiday is also available, to be used at the employee’s discretion.

Vacation

The City initially offers two weeks of paid vacation per calendar year for all regular full time employees. After five years of continuous City service, paid vacation increases to three weeks per year. After ten years of continuous service with the City, one day (8 hours) of vacation shall be added for each year of continuous service to a maximum of four weeks.

Administrative Leave

Exempt City employees are eligible for ten days of administrative leave per calendar year.

Sick Leave

Sick leave shall accrue for all regular full time employees at a rate of eight hours for each month of continuous service, or approximately two weeks per year
