Traffic Calming and Data Collection Systems

Full-Matrix Speed Feedback Radar Sign

The City of Santa Clarita utilizes the Full-Matrix Speed Feedback Radar Sign (unit) as a traffic calming device to enhance motorist awareness of their responsibility to drive safely on City streets. The unit typically displays the speed at which a vehicle is traveling. At certain locations, the unit can utilize custom messaging such as emojis to intuitively interact with motorists by displaying images at different speed thresholds. The unit will be placed on low speed two-lane residential streets and will be programmed to interact with the motorist by providing happy and sad faces depending on the vehicle speed. This system also collects data that can be used to analyze vehicle speeds. Placement of the unit will be visible to the public and some questions may arise such as:
