What's in It for You

Get ready for a fun and eye-opening experience! When you join the Youth in Government program, you’ll:

  • Go Behind the Scenes – Find out how city departments work.
  • See Government in Action – Tour City Hall, public safety buildings, and more.
  • Explore Government – With hands-on, interactive activities.
  • Build Leadership Skills – Teamwork, decision-making, problem solving, and confidence.
  • Make a Difference – Get involved and help make a difference in your community.

Want In? Here's How:

  • Enrollment: 25
  • Eligibility: High school students (9th – 12th grade) who live in or attend school in Santa Clarita
  • Schedule: Sessions will run from September to May on selected weekdays from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. You’ll be part of a team that works together and supports each other during presentations, tours, hands-on projects, and volunteering.
  • Attendance: Attending every session is important. Only one excused absence is allowed. Being late, leaving early, or missing more than one day could result in you being unable to participate in the program.
  • Application: If more than 25 students apply, participants will be selected through a random lottery.

What Happens Next

  • If You’re Selected – You’ll get a call and an email from a staff member the week of August 25. They’ll try twice to reach you. If you don’t reply by the deadline specified in the message or email, your spot will be given to someone on the waitlist.
  • Orientation: Before the program starts, you’ll attend an orientation to help you get ready. You’ll learn what to expect, review the schedule and rules, get tips for working as a team, and meet the other students in the program!
