Thanks to the vision of a special committee established in the early 1990s – which included the City and community leaders from the private sector, non-profits and schools – SCVTV, Santa Clarita’s community television station, got its start. The primary goal of the committee was to model a television station that would serve the widest range of the community. From early on, several partnerships were formed: Hart District ROP and College of the Canyons college programming were two specific examples of long-lasting collaboration. Since it’s formation thousands of programs have been created benefiting the community at large.
The City first began airing it’s planning commission meetings and council meetings in 1996 and began airing meetings live in 1998. For the City of Santa Clarita it was important to maintain an open and accessible form of government, so airing the City Council meetings was a major step.
Over the past 20 years the City of Santa Clarita has had franchise agreements with the cable companies. Since the cable companies use public infrastructure to lay their cable they enter a partnership of sorts with the City and pay for public right of way. The City’s franchise agreement called for the cable companies to provide a PEG station (PEG: Public Access, Education and Government all rolled into one). Although there have been many cable companies during the life of the franchise agreement, SCVTV has continued to be a valued resource to the community.

Also tune in to “Your City” every third Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. “Your City” goes one on one with a different City Council member each month in an in-depth interview. This is a special chance find out where each Council member stands on issues affecting the community. Catch the City Council meetings every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 6:00 p.m.
The City Council Planning Commission meetings air every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. City Council meetings are re-aired the Monday following the original meeting at 9:00 a.m. Times and dates that the City Council meetings are re-aired are subject to change depending on public holidays. Check the monthly listings for exact dates and times of programming.
